Louis Poulsen New Flagship Store in Singapore by Peter Tay Studio by peter tay

Peter Tay recently completed Danish Lighting Brand Louis Poulsen's Flagship Store – the first outside Denmark – in Singapore. Located on Purvis Street, this 1,500sqft space is designed as experiential store, a store that not only caters to the showcasing and retailing of the lighting brand, but also one that allows the customer to understand and experience beauty of the Louis Poulsen exquisite designs.

Divided into three sections, the store is laid out in a progressive sequence that begins with the relation of Louis Poulsen's startling image with the street, proceeding onto a showcase of Louis Poulsen's iconic designs, and ending with a dramatic reflective light box, where the Louis Poulsen lamps are being reflected, multiplied and experienced in their different dimensions.

Louis Poulsen Singapore celebrated its grand opening on 12 February 2015.

THE PEAK INTERVIEW: THE METAMORPHOSIS OF PETER TAY by peter tay

By Denyse Yeo. The Peak Interview

'Celebrated interior designer Peter Tay has taken a spiritual turn.

On the face of it, Peter Tay has lived a charmed life. He’s an acclaimed interior designer, responsible for some of Singapore’s most upscale interiors – particularly penthouses and bungalows in tony districts – with several awards to his name. His list of clients reads like a who’s who of Singapore and beyond, including celebrities – from the Queen of Caldecott Hill Zoe Tay to Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi – billionaire businessmen and luxury property developers. And he has a penthouse in the eastern part of Singapore, filled with collectible furniture pieces. He is known to own one of Singapore’s largest furniture collections. Yet, these are just material for the 43-year-old. Of late, he has been fuelled by a strong desire to give back to society and turn towards the spiritual side of things. A Roman Catholic, Tay is in the process of designing the interiors of three churches, one in a little village outside of Phnom Penh in Cambodia, and the other two in Singapore – upgrading the Church of Sts Peter and Paul in Queen Street, and designing the upcoming Church of the Transfiguration in Punggol.'

Reflections of Peter Tay's exhibition at the Venice Biennale by peter tay

“I have always loved the idea of reflections. I love the way layers of vertically aligned glass creates duality between the exterior and interior spaces, which results in multiple reflections whose boundaries between them are blurred.” - Peter Tay

Reflection(s)

This installation by Peter Tay Studio entitled “Reflection(s)”  explores the duality and interchangeability between architecture and interiors, as well as the relationship between reflection(s), the body and space.

The installation comprises a small enclosure encased with transparent tinted acrylic walls containing a indoor garden filled with silver river pebbles and 6 log stools within a room with the walls darkened. The furthest end of the room is finished in mirrored panels, and on the other, a simple bench.  On each end of the space is an LCD screen. The space is dimly lit, as if illuminated by moonlight. The double but laterally inverted images from the LCD screens mirror each other, its sound echoing each other in space. Its reflections through the transparent panels produce an illusionary image, suspended in time and space within the box, with its filmic motion aligned and played out in perfect synchronicity.

Within the installation space, textural and experiential qualities are intensified, inviting the visitor to leave the “known” visual world behind as he/she takes a step into a space that is at once minimal and familiar, and yet is curious and extraordinary. The movement around the outer edges of the room to reach the pebble garden is a reflective, transitory space. The pebble garden is a space of reflection and suspension, and a space of meditation and introspection. One not only becomes aware and conscious of one’s existence, but also of one’s reflections and projections through the transparent surfaces.

This installation is both an exploration and an interrogation. The exploration of the multiple meanings and depths of the phenomenon of reflection(s) and the body, and at the same time, it is an interrogation of the boundaries and relationships between architecture and interior design, the interchangeability between exterior and interior spaces, as well as the perceptions of our existence in time and space.
